Setmixer. Artist-first in everything we do.

We're here to serve all artists. We help them create, record and refine. We record every time they go on stage, whether for a soundcheck or a gig, and we are creating tools for artists to use those recordings.

Our story

At Setmixer, we're on a mission to revive the beloved bootleg tradition for the digital age—capturing the raw energy and unfiltered talent of live performances with studio-quality audio.

Setmixer was founded by Pascal de Mul, who grew up with bootlegs but saw them disappear during his time at Spotify from 2010 to 15. Bootlegs are unofficial live recordings traded by fans, allowing the spirit of iconic performances to live on. They were shared amongst friends, in record stores, and in “swap meets”—anywhere people met around music.

Unintentionally, by taking over from physical distribution, streaming services drowned out the culture around music exchange, and with that, they also drowned out the bootleg. By 2020, no live music recordings were available anymore apart from terrible-quality handheld videos or a sparse official release.

Music is the only artform
that makes your hair stand on end

At Setmixer, we feel that as a massive gap. We love live music. We love the direct energy, the unfiltered rawness, and the pure exposed talent of an artist on stage singing and playing their heart out in front of their fans. We want to capture and share this like it was before. Not just as a counterweight against the over-produced tone-corrected loudness-war winners in the top charts and against the coming avalanche of AI-generated artificial perfection, but because we love it and we need it. Done well, there is nothing like it: music is the only art form that makes your hair stand on end.

So we set out to bring back this much-missed culture and elevate it with modern technology. The rawness of the performance but in the best form possible. Most importantly, we wanted to return it to the music exchange: democratic, available for everyone, and fair for the artists.

Our principles

Our principles

Our principles

We came up with three core principles that have defined everything we do from day one:

  1. Artist-first:

Music starts with the artist. The artist retains control, and remuneration is fair. We will never do anything with our recordings unless the artist tells us to. And we share 70% of the proceeds from distribution back with the artist—more than any label.

  2. Democratising:
We are there for every artist, no matter where they are in their career and how many fans they have. If they have only two fans, that’s great for us: then we will make two people very happy.

  3. Supporting innovation:
We support up-and-coming bands and the independent sector. We pledge to return 30% of our margins to the venues where the recordings were made or the promoter who organised the shows. For too long, the grassroots sector has taken all the risk at the start of music careers without partaking in the success. We want to build a business that changes this and helps the people at the start.

Our system

With those clear principles, we have now built a system that works. We record studio-quality multichannel audio in a growing list of music venues. We give auto-mixed previews of those recordings to the artists who performed for free. They can use those previews for free—on social media, on releases, wherever they want.

And if artists want to make their own mix, they can. We set a reasonable download price with the venues, 30% of which goes back to the venue. That allows artists to download their show in full multitrack and make their own mix. Many artists have done this already and launched music on streaming platforms, their social media and YouTube videos, and even on vinyl.

Soon, we will have a platform where the artist can make their custom mix without downloading it - right there in our web app, from the multitrack sources, within minutes of every show. This will be 100% free, including recording and mixing. And distribution. Even better: artists that use this will receive 70% of the proceeds from distribution. And the venue gets 30% of the remainder, forever. Even if somebody streams it in 10 years, the venue still gets 9% of all streaming revenue!

This is real

This is real

This is real

his is real, and there are no hidden agendas.

We are incredibly excited about this, and so are the artists. The reviews they write (check us on Google), the direct responses they give us, and the music they make give us more than any financial success could ever give us.

We have full support from MVT, IVW, BPI, and all the venues where we are already live. Once venues hear the artist's response, they become our biggest fans—every time.

We are off to a great start, but there is much more to do. We cannot wait to hear the next shows, and we hope you cannot wait either.

Setmixer: for the artists,
for the venues and for the fans.
